Diablo Game Director Brent Gibson has told PCGamer that Blizzard Entertainment is not planning any additional expansions for Diablo IV now that Diablo V is in the works, but new seasons will allow the studio to continue telling stories in the game until the sequel arrives.
“We’re all focused on [Diablo 4] seasons and getting to Diablo 5,” said Gibson. “We feel like we told the Story of Hatred. We had a great conclusion with Lord of Hatred with what we have with Mephisto, and we are moving towards telling the Story of Terror.”
The events of Diablo 5 happen 100 years after everything that’s happening with Diablo 4, and so that gives us a lot of room to kind of still ride the wave with all the fans on where the story can go as we make our way there. So continuity is something that we’re really excited about, but we don’t necessarily have a perfect picture on exactly where that’s going to go because we want to see how fans are reacting season to season.
When asked if we could expect Diablo IV and V to run concurrently, Gibson hinted that support for the former isn’t going away as long as it remains popular with fans, noting now Diablo 2: Resurrected received a new class earlier this year. “I think you can expect that—you know, Diablo 4 players, they love the game, there’s tons of them out there,” he said. “We’re continuing to support the game for a very long time.”
Diablo V was announced over the weekend at BlizzCon and is planned to launch in Spring 2029 for as-yet unannounced platforms. Diablo IV was released in June 2023 for PS5, PS4, PC, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One. You can read our full review here.
