Bloodborne sales took Sony by surprise

The success of the PlayStation 4-exclusive dungeon crawler, Bloodborne, has taken even Sony by surprise, Fergal Gara, head of Sony Computer Entertainment U.K., has admitted.

Speaking during an interview with MCV, Gara attributed the game’s success partly due to the time in which it was released, as there was little competition to speak of.

"It did surprise us, we had expectations to do well. We looked at the Souls series as a frame of reference, and we thought we could do better than that. We did – and then some. Relative to some of our sister territories, we were being quite ambitious, but even that proved to be conservative.

"I think Bloodborne might have just landed just at the right time; it was a relatively quiet time, it was a very high quality title and a great platform differentiator for us. We were caught a little bit behind in terms of the volume, but we were able to chase it and maximise its potential."

Bloodborne was developed by the same team responsible for the critically acclaimed Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls, though the game isn’t a sequel to either title. Bloodborne has sold over one million copies worldwide to date. Read our review of the game here
