While Blu-ray has already won the HD format war, there’s still a long time to pass before it surpasses the current dominant home video format, DVD. How long? Three and a half years, if the Entertainment Merchants Association (EMA) is to be believed.
In their comprehensive annual report, the EMA purported that "in 2012, sales of Blu-ray Discs will exceed those of standard DVDs and will generate sales of $9.5 billion."
As for 2007, nearly nine million high-definition discs were sold, generating more than $260 million. Meanwhile, 12,177 DVDs released in 2007, down from a peak of 13,950 two years prior.
It seems the market is slowly but surely shifting to Blu-ray as the home video format of choice. Enjoy your remaining years digital video discs.
