2K Games has announced that Borderlands will be hitting store shelves on October 20 in North America, with a European release scheduled for October 23.
The action-RPG follows hot on the heels of Naughty Dog’s hotly anticipated Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, which will be unleashed across the U.S. on October 13. Yet, despite the proximity of the game’s release to the traditionally crowded holiday period, 2K Games feels the risk is worth taking:
"I don’t think we have to be afraid of competition or shy of what’s out there," 2K president Christoph Hartmann told GameSpot. "I think this holiday season is a little bit lighter in triple-A games than last year. It’s actually a good holiday to put something out. … There’s always risk and opportunity. The risk is you have a hard time standing out against established IP. The opportunity is you have a lot of traffic here and it can be a much bigger product at retail than it would be otherwise."
Borderlands will be released for PlayStation 3, PC and Xbox 360.
