The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that GI Joe 3 scribe Aaron Berg has been hired to pen the script for the planned movie adaptation of Borderlands.
Helmed by Lionsgate, the same studio responsible for the massively successful Hunger Games films, the Borderlands movie is said to have an “in your face attitude” that channels Gearbox Studios’ acclaimed video game franchise.
Furthermore, Gearbox’s Randy Pitchford said following the film’s announcement in August 2015 that it’ll probably be an R-rated effort.
Pitchford’s claims were also backed up in the recent Hollywood Reporter article, which says it will carry a Restricted rating. It also mentioned it will provide an “edgy” take on the game series.
The Borderlands movie will be produced by Avi and Ari Avad, the father and son duo who are perhaps best known for adapting the likes of Iron Man, Spider-Man and the X-Men for the silver screen.
No release date has been announce at present, though that’s hardly a surprise considering the project doesn’t yet have a directed attached to it.
As for the Borderlands video game series, Gearbox re-confirmed a third entry in the franchise at PAX East over the weekend. Development on Borderlands 3 won’t really take off however until the studio is finished with Battleborn and its associated DLC.
Borderlands was released back in 2009 on PS3 and Xbox 360 and received a follow-up in 2012. Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel followed in 2014 and was remastered alongside Borderlands 2 for current-generation systems in 2015 as part of Borderlands: The Handsome Collection.
In addition, Telltale Games also developed its own unique take on the franchise with the episodic Tales from the Borderlands last year.
