Though Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel has only been confirmed for Windows PC, Xbox 360 and PS3, 2K Games says it will consider making a Xbox One and PS4 version if reaction to the game is good and current-gen adoption rates improve.
Speaking with GameReactor TV, Gearbox Software’s Matt Armstrong said that its focus right now is firmly on development of Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel on last-gen consoles, as that’s where it believes the main fan-base lies, but if reaction to the game is positive and there’s a demand for a current-gen version then 2K may make it happen.
“The vast majority of our fans still have their Xbox 360 [or PS3],” commented Armstrong. The other thing is it’s the middle game in a trilogy. Moving it on to next-gen and requiring people to buy new hardware to play the middle entry in a trilogy feels a little disingenuous and we sort of want to respect that.
“As we said, one day maybe, I don’t know. We’ll think about that, see how people react to the game, how much fun they have and whether or not everyone moves on to the next gen fully next year. For now we’re pretty happy with our choice and I think people are going to be to.”
2K Australia’s Tony Lawrence confirmed that the publisher would think seriously about bringing the game to Xbox One and PS4 when he said:
"If fans say, ‘Hey, we’d really like this on a next-gen console,’ well, we’ll think about that, but right now we’re concentrating on the consoles we know."
Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is a prequel to the 2012 Borderlands 2 and will once again combine FPS gameplay with RPG mechanics such as quests, loot gathering and character building. Check out PSU’s Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel preview from E3 2014.
