In a move that could be attributed to fear of brand awareness more than anything else, Activision has apparently decided to rename Modern Warfare 2, with the sequel once again carrying the Call of Duty moniker.
News comes following a twitter post by Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling, which depicts what is presumably an early cover design for the game’s packaging. Sure enough, the name ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ is displayed on the cover.
Speaking in light of this development, Activision told Kotaku: “Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare 2 is the direct sequel to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare,” adding, "We have focused our attention on Modern Warfare in order to most effectively communicate the fact that this is the first true sequel in the Call of Duty series. Infinity Ward, the original creators of the Call of Duty franchise, has said from the beginning Modern Warfare 2 resides in the Call of Duty universe. This is reflected in the title’s package."
Please Activision, let that be the end of it. Modern Warfare 2 is due out in November 2009.
