Capcom’s Motohide Eshiro has thrown the cat among the pigeons in regards to the commercial failure of Okami, pointing the blame squarely on the doorstep of the announcement of the PlayStation 3 and Wii.
The Clover Studios classic attracted ample praise from critics upon its release in 2006, though ultimately failed to entrance punters with its unique blend of sumptuous visuals and innovative combat system. Or if you want us to be blunt, it flopped.
The reason, Eshiro-san reckons, is simple: folk were too busy gawping at Sony and Nintendo flexing their next-gen muscles at the time.
"I can’t comment officially but, personally speaking, I think it had a lot to do with the announcements for new consoles," he told ONM. "That was overshadowing any other game news at the time."
If you haven’t already done so, we highly recommend seeking out a copy of Okami asap – you won’t regret it.
