Capcom’s Sales Won’t Be Significantly Impacted By All-Digital Future

Resident Evil publisher Capcom has revealed that the shift to an all-digital future won’t have a major impact on it sales, as the company generates a substantial chunk of its revenue from digital game purchases.

Speaking during a Q&A session in wake of its latest financial results, Capcom was quizzed what impact it anticipates as a result of the physical games market continuing to shrink in the long term. In response, the publisher stated that the majority of its game sales are digital, and as such it doesn’t foresee a problem as the market shifts away from physical discs.

Approximately 90% of our unit sales are digital. We do not anticipate a significant impact at this time,” said the company.

As previously reported, Capcom announced during its latest financial results that more than 93% of its overall game sales were made from digital purchases — a figure it expects to climb to 95.4% by the end of the current fiscal year.

Sony of course has announced plans to cease production of physical game discs in January 2028 as it plans to embrace a digital-only future, all but confirming the PS6 will not feature a disc drive. While receiving massive backlash online and acknowledging the ‘strong views‘ from consumers, the format holder has no plans to change its mind on the decision.
