Konami Says Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse Is Not A Roguelike Game; Is More Like Classic Castlevania

Speaking during an interview with The Verge, Konami’s Tommy Williams stated that the upcoming Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse is going to have more in common with classic Castlevania than the roguelike genre that developers Motion Twin and Evil Empire are best known for.

Williamson made it clear that the latest entry in the 40-year-old franchise will not go down the roguelike path that Dead Cells and The Rogue Prince of Persia did.

Castlevania Belmont’s Curse is a 2D action-exploration game where players can freely explore vast, elaborately crafted maps. It is not a roguelike or roguelite game.

Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse takes place in Medieval Paris during 1499, which has been overrun by demonic creatures. Trevor Belmont is contacted by the local bishop to save his people, prompting Trevor and a young member of the clan to travel to Paris to ride the city of its demonic forces. Much like the formula established in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Belmont’s Curse employs an open non-linear game world for players to explore, with the iconic whip attack offering free movement including the ability to use it to traverse areas by swinging it like a rope.

Konami has confirmed that Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse is slated to release in 2026 for PS5, PC, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.
