Classic Tracks: Final Fantasy VII’s ‘Barret’s Theme’

Music is a powerful medium. Capable of stirring up long-forgotten memories and evoking powerful emotion in the listener, music can reduce even the burliest of blokes into blubbering, crumpled heaps. And who says that us guys are afraid to show their sensitive side? Poppycock. Of course, video games are no exception to this rule, and as often is the case, a stellar soundtrack can greatly accentuate the on-screen antics, elevating even the most perfunctory scene to hard-hitting greatness.

In a continued celebration of some of gaming’s ear-pleasing aural accomplishments, PSU presents yet another instalment in our on-going Classic Tracks series. This time around, we shine the spotlight on the theme tune to one of Final Fantasy VII’s most loyal sidekicks.

Name: Barret’s Theme
Soundtrack: Final Fantasy VII Original Soundtrack
Composer(s): Nobuo Uematsu

Barret Wallace is a force to be reckoned with. Broader than a barn and wielding his iconic gun arm, the AVALANE boss remains one of Cloud Strife’s most loyal companions throughout the epic journey that is Final Fantasy VII. Each character in the game boasts his or her own theme tune, and Barret is no exception; however, the track perhaps isn’t what you expect from someone who looks like they’d give Mr. T a run for his money. Played only once in the entire game, Barret’s Theme is a jovial, upbeat number that in many ways belies Wallace’s tough guy persona. However, at the same time it celebrates his strength of character and eternal optimism, something which comes in handy when the chips are down later on in the adventure.
