CoD: Black Ops dev extols new facial animation tech

Treyarch has heaped praise on its use of a swanky new facial animation capture system for Call of Duty: Black Ops, though admitted the tech is capable of depicting kills so brutal that things had to be toned down a notch or two.

Speaking during a chinwag with the Official PlayStation Magazine, Black Ops director Dave Anthony spoke highly of the new technology, teasing, "We’ve completely changed the way we do facial animation.”

"Some of the stuff we’ve done with Gary Oldman’s character is amazing."

However, the new system was apparently a little too realistic in places, with animation director Dominique Drozdz quick to observe, "There were situations going too far.”

"It was a contextual kill where you were twisting the neck. It was too much. The throat cutting [is] nasty, but that was worse."

Call of Duty: Black Ops is due for release worldwide on November 9.
