CoD: Black Ops to include stereoscopic 3D

Treyarch’s Mark Lamia has confirmed that the hotly anticipated Call of Duty: Black Ops will support stereoscopic 3D functionality when the game hits stores this November.

Chatting with the folks at GameTrailers, Lamia teased that the Cold War-era FPS features “huge” locations that will look “awesome” while running in 3D, noting that gamers will be able to turn the feature on or off at any time.

"We do the games in a real-time 3D engine, so doing stereoscopic 3D was really natural," said Lamia.

"You can turn it on or off at any time," he noted. "There are elements of 3D that are emulated really, really well in that world. We have huge environments that look awesome in 3D."

When quizzed on the technical challenges faced with implementing 3D compatibility, the studio head added: "Look, there’s absolutely overhead for rendering additional frames. However, we have tuned it so that it’s very smooth and feels very good to the player."

Black Ops will also support split-screen in stereoscopic 3D. The game hits retailers worldwide on November 9.
