Criterion talks Burnout for PS4 HD Collection

Criterion Games has broached the subject of a possible Burnout HD Collection for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, after fans flocked to Twitter to quiz the studio on the future of the series.

Writing in response to one fan enquiring about seeing the classic series remastered for current-generation consoles, Criterion made it clear it’s moved on from Burnout.

Hah! You’re not the first with that one,” said the studio. “Nice idea but it’s still not true. We’ve moved on to newer, even better things!

The only Burnout-related news that Criterion did have to share is that it is busy working on getting Burnout Paradise up and running for Xbox One’s backwards compatibility functionality. Not much is known in regards to the studio’s next project, and aside from some concept art showcased at E3 two years ago, we’ve heard nothing on the mysterious title since. Back in April 2013, the studio’s Alex Ward said the U.K. developer was moving away from the Burnout franchise and racing games in general.

Burnout was released in 2001 for PS2 and Xbox and was followed by Burnout 2: Point of Impact (2002) and Burnout 3: Takedown (2004), both of which were released for the same generation of consoles. Burnout Revenge would mark the series final outing on PS2 in 2005, with the critically acclaimed Burnout Paradise arriving on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2008. Aside from a number of spinoff titles, including 2011’s Burnout Crash!, Criterion has not developed a full-fledged sequel to Paradise despite the high demand among fans of the series.

Featuring high-speed gameplay, Burnout has made a reputation among gamers for its emphasis on crashes and aggressive driving skills. As the series progressed, Burnout leaned more towards the element of aggression towards your fellow racers, with the third instalment in the franchise rewarding takedowns, particularly within the single-player campaign. The biggest shift to the Burnout paradigm came with Paradise, which placed gamers within an open-world setting, allowing players to explore the city at their leisure in addition to progressing through missions.
