Dark Souls 3 review roundup: prepare to die all over again

The Dark Souls series has slowly yet inexorably made the transition from cult hit to mainstream success since its inception in 2011 (that is, not counting Demon’s Souls, which is more a spiritual predecessor than anything), and it’s obvious From Software has settled into a winning formula with the arrival of the third instalment in the franchise this month. Dark Souls 3, the first in the series to be exclusive to current-generation systems, arrives on the scene with more than its fair share of tweaks to the established template, not to mention packing in some beautiful landscapes to match its visceral, tough-as-nails combat.

As we discovered in our recent hands-on preview, Bloodborne’s more fast-paced antics have obviously had an influence in the latest Souls outing; not that this is bad thing by any means, as it actually makes for a smoother gameplay experience. There also appears to be a more concerted effort to appeal to both hardened gamers and newcomers, which is surely going to expand the Souls brand’s appeal.

We’re still in the midst of braving the dungeons of Dark Souls 3, so our review will be due a little later than expected. However, we’ve compiled a list of scores from other critics to tide you over this morning to give you an idea of what everyone else thinks about Miyazaki-san’s latest dungeon crawler.

Check them out below.
