Back in 2003, LucasArts created what is probably one of their best games to date, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic for the PC and Xbox. Since then, LucasArts has continuously fallen short of the aura that was created with KOTOR. Even though Star Wars: Battlefront 2 sold significantly more than both KOTOR titles combined, the Star Wars community is still in search of that next great Star Wars videogame. It now appears that the wait could be drawing to an end because in San Rafael, CA, the LucasArts team is cooking up Star Wars: The Force Unleashed which is expected to be a major presence at GDC and a possible 2008 Game of the Year.
With all of that anticipation, what is in it in terms of core gameplay and story? Well besides the fact that you can play as Darth Vader’s secret apprentice as well as a number of new engine technologies, Force Unleashed is a beast of a game. Now what could make it more of a beast is the idea of playing as Lord Vader himself. Yes, that is correct, according to Vanity Fair, players will take control of Darth Vader in the initial level of the game where they must go toe to toe with some Wookiees. It is explained how the new engines create an immersive feel while Vader uses his unparalleled force powers to destroy anything in his path.
"Then, pushing another button, he hurls that energy at the furry, fanged Wookiees. A bunch of them go flying off into space, causing the D.M.M.-enabled bridge to start rippling like a water bed. This sends more Euphoria-infused Wookiees toppling over the sides while those that remain struggle to regain their balance."
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is expected to release this summer. PSU will also cover this game at GDC this year, so check out for that.
