Dead Island 2 Adopts Skill Deck System Over Traditional Skill Trees

Dambuster Studios Creative Director James Worrall has revealed during a chinwag with Game Informer that Dead Island 2 is putting the tired-and-tested skill tree system in the grave in favour of skill deck progression.

Worrall described this new system as “collection of slots that represent all kinds of different abilities, and you swap the cards in and out, on the fly, however and whenever you want. You can take some real risks with your loadout. It sometimes pays off, it sometimes goes horribly wrong.”

Interestingly, players will be able to change these skills when they see fit, even in mid-air, allowing you to switch things up when the situation calls for it.

Dead Island 2 is finally due out on April 28, 2023 for PS4, PS5, PC, Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One. The game has been a long time coming, having originally been announced nearly a decade ago with Yager at the helm.

This didn’t work out with that particular developer, and Sumo Digital took over a few years later. Finally, Dambuster Studios was then hired to take over production back in 2019, with Dead Island 2 re-revealed at GamesCom 2022.
