Zombie RPG Dead Island looks set to make the jump to the silver-screen at some point down the line, following the announcement that Lionsgate has optioned the rights to the film from publisher Deep Silver.
In perhaps an unsurprising revelation, the company has said the film adaptation will draw inspiration from Dead Island’s controversial CGI debut trailer released earlier this year.
Lionsgate claims the movie “will be an innovation of the zombie genre because of its focus on human emotion, family ties and non-linear storytelling.”
Little else is known on the flick, which is currently in the early stages of production, though Sean Daniel (The Mummy, Tombstone) will be heading up production.
“Like the hundreds of journalists and millions of fans who were so passionate and vocal about the Dead Island trailer, we too were awestruck,” commented Joe Drake, co-COO of Lionsgate.
"This is exactly the type of property we’re looking to adapt at Lionsgate – it’s sophisticated, edgy, and a true elevation of a genre that we know and love. It also has built in brand recognition around the world, and franchise potential.”
