Death Stranding: Guillermo Del Toro has no creative role

Hollywood director Guillermo Del Toro has clarified his involvement in the upcoming PlayStation 4-exclusive action game Death Stranding.

Speaking to IGN, Del Toro confirmed that he is indeed appearing in the Hideo Kojima-directed opus, but does not have any creative involvement in the title. This isn’t the first time the pair have worked together either, having previously collaborated on the cancelled horror title, Silent Hills.

Kojima-san called me and said, ‘I want you to be a character in the game,’ and I said, ‘Gladly.’ He’s discussed his ideas so I could understand the character, but other than that I’m not involved, creatively, at all," he explained.

"This is entirely Kojima-san’s game," del Toro added. "I think it’s gonna be a fantastic game, 100%. But this is him and his ideas. I’m just a puppet in his hands. My contribution is limited to being a cheerleader for his ideas and being scanned for long hours at a time. That’s about it."

Death Stranding also features appearances by actors Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead) and Mads Mikkelson (Casino Royale), who are set to play the main character and antagonist, respectively. The game has not been given an official release date as of yet, though Kojima-san has said we can expect the game out before 2019.

Not much is known about the ambitious-looking project as of yet, although its creator has revealed we can expect action-based elements, an open-world, and some form of multiplayer component. The ambiguous debut trailer has already generated much speculation among fans, some of which Kojima-san has already addressed directly.

Death Stranding is the first project from the newly-established independent branch of Kojima Productions, which formed out of the ashes of Kojima-san’s departure from Konami.
