Demo For Unannounced Gex Jr Game Has Been Discovered On Old CD-R

The Gex franchise hasn’t been active since 1999, but a demo for an unannounced title has found its way online after being discovered on an old CD-R.

YouTuber justz00t uploaded the demo and was added to Archive.org by the user who originally discovered it on the CD-R, which was dated January 25, 2001.

The demo features Gex Jr firing off pop-culture references including one clearly inspired by Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. Square Enix snapped up the rights to the Gex series last year in Europe, although nothing has been announced for the IP as of yet.

Chances are if you’re of a certain age you haven’t heard of Gex, so here’s a little recap. The original game was released for the 3DO in 1995, and was developed by Crystal Dynamics, who went on to work on the Tomb Raider series. Gex later arrived for the PSOne and Sega Saturn under development duties at Beam Software.

1998 saw the release of Gex: Enter the Gecko for the PSOne, Nintendo 64, PC, and Game Boy Color, again developed by Crystal Dynamics. The N64 version had fewer stages due to limitations imposed by its cartridge-based media, but did boast an exclusive level not seen in other versions.

Finally, Gex: Deep Cover Gecko was released for the PSOne in 1999 and so far is the latest entry in the franchise, although it would be great to see the 90s icon make a comeback.
