Electronic Arts has said it expects the company’s revenue from digital-based offerings will soon surpass that of traditional physical goods.
Speaking with Reuters, Peter Moore, EA’s Chief Operating Officer, insisted that although he foresees digital sales overtaking boxed products, the publishing giant won’t completely abandon physical software as long as there remains demand for it.
“There will come a point, whether it is two or three years from now, when we say ‘we are doing more in digital media now than we are in physical media,’ and it’s clearly…not far away,” said Moore.
The executive added that boxed goods won’t disappear anytime soon: “We will never abandon physical media. As long as the consumer wants to buy something on a disc, we will be there to offer it.”
Reuters notes that EA’s revenue from physical media for the FY ending March 2013 is expected to reach $2.6 billion, with digital goods forecast to return $1.7 billion.
