DmC dev says Dante is ‘more of a street brawler’

Ninja Theory has let slip that its upcoming actioner DmC: Devil May Cry will portray Dante as a less refined combatant than the silver-haired hero we have become acquainted with over the past decade or so.

Speaking to the U.S. PlayStation Blog, creative director Tameen Antoniades revealed that DmC’s Dante grew up on the streets, and as such is a little more brash than his previous incarnation.

“Growing up in a situation where the demons are out to kill him; society in general, controlled by the demons, is out to crush him; growing up on the streets… So, he’s more of a street brawler,” he explained.

“His moves are less refined than you would have seen in previous DMCs.”

However, Antoniades was quick to note that this doesn’t mean the wise-cracking demon slayer is a complete newbie:  “I wouldn’t say he’s green and naive, I’d just say he doesn’t give a f**k,” he added.

Elsewhere, the developer also touched on the game’s combat mechanics, revealing players will be able to gauge their performance by how the background music evolves.

“The music responds to your ranking system, so the better you play, the more layers of music kick in, and if you get to the top ranks, then the screaming vocals kick in and it kind of affects you when you play, because you know you’re doing well,” he said.

DmC: Devil May Cry is due out on PlayStation 3, PC and Xbox 360 in 2012.
