Don’t expect a download-only PS4, but Sony considered it

At one point in the conceptual or development stages of Sony’s next console, the Japanese company considered a download-only platform. According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, which references “sources familiar with the matter,” Sony decided to take the classic disc route instead of providing a console that relies entirely on digital game distribution.

For many, this may come as a sign of relief considering the vocal opposition to this move with the PSPGo. But a model that relies entirely on digital distribution would have prevented many with poor internet connections across the world from having reliable access to content, according to the WSJ report. Retail stores that sell games would likely be up-in-arms with the switch, as well.

There are also rumors that either Sony or Microsoft will announce more cloud gaming support. This announcement is expected at E3. The report also states Sony will release its next home console in 2013.
