Annapurna Interactive has assured Mixtape owners that the game won’t be delisted due to expiring music licenses.
The game’s creative director, Johnny Galvatron, revealed to Kotaku that the studio forked out extra in order to secure the permanent licenses. In addition, the Annapurna Interactive shared on its X account, “We heard some people say MIXTAPE would be delisted due to music licenses expiring. That was a lie.”
Mixtape follows three high school friends as they set off on one last adventure, when a curated playlist transports them into dreamlike reenactments of their formative years. Players will experience narrative-based vignettes that explore major moments that shaped their lives, acting as a greatest hits-style presentation of teenage friendship, from a first kiss to the last dance.
The game’s soundtrack includes the likes of DEVO, Roxy Music, Lush, The Smashing Pumpkins, Iggy Pop, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division, and more. Mixtape also draws inspiration from coming-of-age films, combining nostalgia, music, the trials and tribulations of adolescence, and personal growth.
