Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons, the latest chapter in the long-running beat-‘em-up series that began in 1987, is coming to PS5, PS4, PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One in Summer 2023, Modus Games has announced.
Set in New York City at an undisclosed date in the 1990s, Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons sees the Big Apple wrecked by a nuclear war, resulting in its denizens fighting for survival in the streets, which are rife with crime and rioting. However, heroes Billy and Jimmy Lee take it upon themselves to clean up the city, Streets of Rage-style.
As well as Billy and Jimmy, Double Dragon Gaiden offers multiple playable characters including Marian, who is a firearm-wielding ranged fighter, as well as Uncle Matin, who brings a riot shield to the party. Players can also enjoy seamless tag team abilities to fuel devastating combos, while the dynamic mission select, whereby the order in which you choose your mission will affect its length, amount of bad guys, and difficulty.
Long-time fans will be chuffed to learn that the series’ retro-flavoured aesthetic has been maintained alongside overhauled pixel art visuals, offering an update yet faithful continuation of Double Dragon series. Modus Games is also promising unlockable bonuses, adjustable difficulty levels, a permadeath option, and infinite modes to round out the package.
Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons is due out in Summer 2023.
