E3 2011: Ghost Recon Future Soldier, four player co-op, stealth kills and augmented reality system

At E3 2011, Ubisoft has showcased the latest game in its popular Ghost Recon franchise, confirming elite co-op play, stealth kills and more than 50 weapons.

Ghost Recon Future Soldier will put players in the role of Sergeant John Kozak as he fights with three squad mates across a variety of terrains, from snow-covered mountains of the Artic Circle to the intense heat of Africa. There will be 14 campaign missions taking approximately 10 hours to complete and combat will comprise of tactical take-downs, close-quarters combat and large-scale strikes.

The Cross-Com system makes a welcome return, allowing players to co-ordinate attacks, while a new augmented reality system (A.T.L.A.S) will give players real-time feedback and intel on the evolving situation on the battlefield.  Another new feature is W.A.R, a weapon augmented reality system that allows players to "synchronize their Cross-com to any weapon they use instantly."

For the first time in the series, Ubisoft will incorporate stealth kills and what it calls "brutal close-quarter combat moves." The official press release also brings news of the storyline.

It reads:

Part of the Group for Specialized Tactics, a Special Mission Unit under the direct command of the Joint Special Operations Command, the elite of the modern US Special Forces is better known by their battlefield legend. They are the untraceable soldiers called the Ghosts.

Only the best of the best, soldiers with a unique mix of skills on and off the battlefield, ever get to wear the coveted Ghost insignia.  Equipped with the most advanced combat technology, the Ghosts track down the highest-value targets in the highest-risk conflict areas around the world, fighting from the shadows in any climate or terrain.

In the near future, four of these elite soldiers serve as the tip of the spear in a hidden war raging across the globe.  But even as Ghost Lead, Pepper, 30K, and Kozak accomplish their objectives, they discover the threat they face is greater than they ever imagined – one that could alter the international balance of power forever.

Ghost Recon Future Soldier is set for release in Fall 2011 and will also include a comprehensive multiplayer mode. We’ll bring you details of that shortly.
