EA acquires rights to develop & publish Star Wars games

After the closing of LucasArts, the future of Star Wars games was up in the air. Today, Electronic Art acquired exclusive rights from The Walt Disney Company to develop and publish games set in that galaxy far, far away.

EA’s rights will be for developing Star Wars titles for the core gaming demographic while Disney will retain certain rights to mobile, social, tablet and online games.

“Every developer dreams of creating games for the Star Wars universe,” said EA Labels President Frank Gibeau. “Three of our top studios will fulfill that dream, crafting epic adventures for Star Wars fans. DICE and Visceral will produce new games, joining the BioWare team which continues to develop for the Star Wars franchise. The new experiences we create may borrow from films, but the games will be entirely original with all new stories and gameplay.”

No financial information has been released so it’s unclear how much it cost EA to acquire the rights to Star Wars.
