EA has announced today in a press release that it is bringing back College Football games, being the exclusive developer for college football simulation games, but there are a few catches.

The development has just begun so it is still a few years away and will include more than 100 university institutions, including the logos, stadiums, uniforms, traditions, and more. However, the game won’t include student-athletes, their names, images or likenesses). However, EA has said that they are “continuing to watch those developments closely.” But, we don’t see a decision like this changing.

Cam Weber for EA Sports offered a statement on the announcement today:

“We’ve heard from the millions of passionate fans requesting the return of college football video games. We love the energy, tradition and pageantry of college football and I am beyond thrilled to say we are back in development. We have a lot of really exciting work ahead of us, and a great team that is eager to bring a new game to players in the next couple of years.”

While the decision to not include real players may seem strange the franchise stopped development due to this issue and EA settled in court, agreeing to pay athletes for their likeness, which were used between 2003 and 2014, after athletes brought forward a lawsuit. But with the last game being released in July 2013, a return for the franchise seems promising, but as it is still years away we will have to see what happens with its development.
