Former Silicon Knights boss Denis Dyack has said he believes a remaster of cult GameCube title Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem would perform well in today’s market, and isn’t against the idea of overhauling the horror title for modern audiences.
Speaking in a new interview with KIWI TALKZ posted on YouTube, Dyack revealed that he “gets asked all the time” about a remaster of Eternal Darkness, and reckons it would “resonate” with fans. Furthermore, the upcoming Deadhaus Sonata is seen as a way of bringing back “the voice” of titles such as Eternal Darkness and Legacy of Kain.
Would a remaster of Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem sell well today?] I think so. […] We’re making Deadhaus Sonata, [and] doing a lot of crazy things; some of the stuff we haven’t announced yet, and we’re trying to create the holy grail of… sort of narrative, and some of the things we’re doing, but, just sort of push that aside for now. More than anything else, we’re trying to bring the voice of games like Eternal Darkness and Legacy of Kain that have essentially become extinguished.
Games like those are not being made any more. [And so,] that was one of the reasons we started working on Deadhaus: “we need to make a game like that, cause no one’s doing them anymore.” So yeah, I do agree that [a remaster] would resonate, and we do get asked all the time [about it.] So who knows, maybe someday.
Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem was released for the GameCube back in 2002 and takes the form of a third-person horror title where players uncover the history of the Roivas family and their battle against the Darkness. Players begin their journey in the present day before going back to revisit their ancestor’s throughout history using the Tome of Eternal Darkness, which grants the owner magical abilities.
By far the most memorable aspect of Eternal Darkness is its sanity effects, where encounters with enemies drains your character’s sanity meter, resulting in numerous hallucinations and strange occurrences, some of which break the fourth wall.
