Ex-PlayStation Boss Shawn Layden Says ‘Exclusives Will Always Be Important’

Speaking on What’s Up PlayStation, Shawn Layden, the former CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment and chairman of Worldwide Studios, has stated his belief that exclusives still play an important role for console manufacturers in the current market.

Exclusivity will always be important, it helps focus and highlight the features of your platform. What can you do here technically that you can’t do someplace else. But, as your platform becomes established as the market recognizes where you sit in that pantheon of gaming options, I think the necessity of exclusivity becomes a little bit less.

Sony’s first-party lineup for the PS5 includes a number of major franchises such as Ratchet & Clank, God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, The Last of Us, and more. In recent years, the console maker has been focussing on bringing a number of its first-party titles to PC, something which is set to continue with Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut.
