Ralph Fulton, General Manager at Playground Games and director of Fable, has revealed the developer isn’t worried about launching alongside other major titles, as the franchise itself carries enough weight to stand on its own. However, there is, surprisingly, one title he’s glad to be avoiding — can you guess what game?
“We’re a big game ourselves,” Fulton told IGN. “We hold ourselves to high standards. I’m happy to go toe-to-toe with a bunch of other games.” However, he admitted “there’s just one that I’m happy to avoid entirely,” which is almost certainly Grand Theft Auto VI, as no one really wants to share the same window as Rockstar’s behemoth.
Fable was originally scheduled to launch later this year but has now been delayed to February next year, avoiding a decidedly packed release window. “I think the rationale behind moving us out of October, the date that we were in previously, is pretty apparent to everybody,” said Fulton.
Fable is scheduled to launch for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S on February 23, 2027, and functions as a reimagining of the franchise rather than a continuation of the previous instalments in the former Xbox-exclusive juggernaut. Set in a new version of the fictional kingdom of Albion, Fable sees players creating their own Hero before embarking on a quest to try and reverse the effects of a mysterious stranger’s spell, which has turned the residents of your home village to stone.
Keeping in with the previous Fable games, this new game includes a morality system that sees the player’s relationships affected by key decisions made in the open world, while the Living Population system gives individual personalities and routines to more than 1,000 NPCs. Albion is freely explorable and your Hero can be customised to your liking, while combat combines melee, ranged, and magic attacks.
