Falcom revives Brandish RPG for PSP

Falcom is bringing yet another classic role-playing franchise to PlayStation Portable, in this case action RPG Brandish, newly subtitled "The Dark Revenant".

Haven’t heard of it? No we hadn’t either, but from the looks of Siliconera’s screenshots it’s more than worth your attention. Check out those large, detailed character portraits in particular.

A top-down RPG originally released for the NEC PC-9801 and FM Towns PCs (and subsequently in English for the SNES), Brandish tells the tale of Varik and Alexis, a mysterious swordsman and hot-blooded sorceress respectively, who fall into a hidden dungeon while trying to murder one another. This dungeon turns out to be the sunken town of Berimya, scene of a long-forgotten battle between dragons and humankind.

Falcom is giving the game a 3D makeover but the fundamentals should remain the same – top-down hacking and slashing all the way to the bank.

Brandish: The Dark Revenant is down for release on March 19 in Japan, and hopefully Falcom’s partner Atlus will publish it in North America not long after.
