FIFA 09 gets new card trading Ultimate Team mode

Electronic Arts has today confirmed that FIFA 09 will be getting a new online game mode entitled FIFA 09 Ultimate Team, which can be downloaded via the Xbox live marketplace and PlayStation Network on March 19, 2009.

The new game mode, which involves virtual cards, is designed so that players can attempt to create the ultimate dream team by bringing together the most talented players in the world and then competing against other teams for the ultimate accolade.

There will be 30 cards in total, which will be split up into bronze, silver and gold types and will fit into various categories, including Player, Staff, Contract, Formations and Tactics. Players will have to strategically collect cards and then try and beat opponents by using certain match strategies and by choosing the right formation, tactic and player cards. They’ll also be special gameplay cards that can be used to gain a tactical advantage during each match.

Ultimate Team will also feature online card trading and offline marketplace browsing and full customization, allowing you to create your own player cards and design your own kits and badges for your ultimate football club.

Finally they’ll be an online league table to see how you compare against the rest of the world.

There’s no word on price yet (we guess it’s not free), but we do know that there will be a five game free trial of the new mode before release.
