Square Enix has revealed that Final Fantasy XVI is exclusive to the PS5 as Sony simply offered the publisher more attractive acquisition deal than competing console manufacturer Microsoft.
Speaking with Game Informer, the game’s producer, Naoki ‘Yoshi-P’ Yoshida, explained that Square Enix explored multiple company offers regarding Final Fantasy XVI, and it was Sony that ultimately came back with the best one.
Final Fantasy [is one] of Square Enix’s [most] important franchises up there with Dragon Quest and the Kingdom Hearts series. When we do begin development, we do approach multiple platforms, multiple companies, about releasing the game. And when you approach them, they’re going to come back to us with their offers.
That said, from a developer and programmer perspective, limiting development to one system makes it not only easier on us but allows us the ability to optimize it. And that allows us the ability to maximize performance for that one system because we’re only concentrating on that one system.
Final Fantasy XVI is scheduled for release on June 22, 2023 for PS5. Square Enix said this week that it currently has no plans for any DLC, and isn’t preparing for a Day One patch, although noted things could change.
