The director behind Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has revealed during an interview with Eurogamer that he was ‘blown away’ when he saw the game running for the first time on Sony’s PS5 Pro.
Naoki Hamaguchi told the site that the use of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) via PS5 Pro allowed them to achieve not only high visual quality, but also a solid frame rate — something which was hard to do on the base PS5.
I think certainly that was one of the problems with using the PS5 base hardware, is that to try and get 60fps output with the same level of graphic fidelity and resolution as you have in the graphics mode was something that was just really, really difficult to achieve. But certainly using the PSSR technology within the Pro, that really did allow us to do both at once and achieve both of those goals of the frame rate together with the resolution. I remember when I saw it for the first time, I really was blown away by it.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was released for PS5 back in February 2024, and is one of a number of third-party games that takes advantage of the PS5 Pro’s extra horsepower. The game has been nominated for seven gongs at this year’s The Game Awards, while Hamaguchi-san said back in August that he feels its successor, Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3, will be ‘one of the most loved, most popular games‘ of all time.
