Final Fantasy VII Revelation Director Teases ‘Even Bigger Open World Map’ With The Ability To Revisit Rebirth Locations

Naoki Hamaguchi, Game Director on Final Fantasy VII Revelation, has revealed during an interview with GamesRadar that the upcoming RPG has a much larger open world map than its predecessor, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, which itself was a massive step up over the original game.

It was previously confirmed during the game’s reveal at Summer Game Fest on Friday that the Highwind airship will allow players to freely explore the world in Final Fantasy VII Revelation, with Cloud and his chums able to parachute to locations from the airship. The original Final Fantasy VII of course gave players the Highland during the latter stages of the game, although the airship had to land for you to explore.

For Revelation, the map is not only bigger than Rebirth, but Hamaguchi-san confirmed all previous locations from that game are featured in the concluding chapter, albeit with some little tweaks.

With the third entry of our FF7 Remake series, Revelation, we’re offering an even bigger open world map. How that works is that there’s obviously the Highwind [airship] traversal feature where players can fly around in the open world and they can parachute down anywhere they want to. It’s not just that, but there’s – when you look at the scale of it – the horizontal width of the map is far bigger than Rebirth, but it’s also the vertical depth as well because now you can control this skies too.

I am happy to say that yes, again, all areas featured in Rebirth will also appear in Revelation in the same scope, if not bigger. We didn’t want to just keep it the same as it was in Rebirth. We’re actually adding a little bit of touches and twists to it.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation is scheduled for release in Spring 2027 for PS5, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series X/S. Set following the events of FFVII Rebirth, the game is the concluding chapter in the remake project and sees Cloud and his friends preparing for the final showdown with Sephiroth, as the threat of Meteor looms over the planet.
