Speaking during an interview with GamesRadar during Fan Fest Berlin last month, Final Fantasy VII Revelation game director Naoki Hamaguchi revealed that the game’s job system – known as Function Integrated Tactical Suitwear (FITS) – will be limited to four jobs per character.
The job system allows Cloud and his companions to change up their combat styles and comes with a complementary new outfit. For example, Could himself has already been seen rocking a Warrior outfit, while Tifa is kitted out in a Black Mage look. Hamaguchi-san explained that they capped the amount of jobs for each character to four, and for good reason, too.
“It did make me realize all over again how hard it is to develop games these days. When you look at some of the early Final Fantasy games that have job systems, you could put a lot in there,” he said. While earlier games like Final Fantasy V had more than 20 jobs to play around with, it’s just not feasible anymore, with Hamaguchi noting it’s “just insanely difficult” unless you are an “ongoing title” such as Final Fantasy XIV where you add content “bit by bit.”
The FITS system has four different outfits for each character, and each of those is quite a defined role. In the end, that has added quite a lot of breadth of strategy for players to engage with, so I think it has resulted in a really good addition to the battle system. Even though we only have four FITS, we have a lot of characters, so it was quite a lot of work.
Hamaguchi has been very forthcoming with Final Fantasy VII Revelation details as of late. Just recently, he told Automaton-Media that any potential DLC for the game would likely focus on ‘untold stories‘ for its cast, as the goal of Revelation is to complete the story. Meanwhile, the game director told GamesRadar that he’s aware some players became a little tired of the side content in FFVII Rebirth, resulting in some people stepping away from the game.
Final Fantasy VII Revelation is due out in Spring 2027 for PS5, PC, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S.
