Final Fantasy XIII-related announcement teased by Square

The latest issue of Famitsu magazine contains some tantalizing tidbits on the future of the ever-expanding Final Fantasy XIII universe.

Speaking to the publication, Square Enix’s Motomu Toriyama indicated that we can expect an announcement pertaining to new FFXIII content at the Final Fantasy 25th Anniversary event in late August.

“The [FFXIII-2] Lighting download content had an ending that left a feeling of mystery and hope. The day when the meaning of this will come to light is not too far off,” said Toriyama-san.

Interestingly, some fans have speculated that Square is actually beavering away on a sequel to Final Fantasy XIII-2, fuelled by the ‘to be continued’ message at the game’s climax and subsequent DLC endings.

However, it is likely we can expect more post-launch content for the game as opposed to a full-fledged sequel. Still, Square surprised us all by releasing FFXIII-2, so anything is possible.

Elsewhere, the FFXIII-2 director issued comment on the status of Final Fantasy X HD, suggesting the game is still some way off.

“Regarding HD conversions, there is a lot to look into, so please wait a bit more,” he said.

Toriyama was also asked to offer his opinion on Square’s impressive-looking Luminous Engine, replying that the tech is capable of pumping out some truly amazing visuals matching pre-rendered CG. Unsurprisingly, he confirmed Square is already gearing up for the arrival of new hardware.

“While still at the technology development stage, we’re currently moving to the phase where we come together with our game development teams and prepare for the next-generation machines,” he said.
