Final Fantasy XIV changes to endgame currency detailed

This one’s for regular Final Fantasy XIV players, and won’t make much sense to non-players. But since Final Fantasy XIV is the best console MMORPG and one of PS4’s best games, here goes:

Convert any Allagan tomestones of philosophy you have lying around to tomestones of mythology, and think about spending those mythology tomestones while you’re at it.

When Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn first launched, philosophy and mythology tomestones were the only endgame currencies, both awarded through completing dungeons, raids, and other activities. With the introduction of new, higher-level gear and tomestones of soldiery in Patch 2.2, philosophy tomestones became antiquated, but could be converted up to mythology tomestones, the new “worse” currency.

It’s part of an ongoing developer effort to ensure Final Fantasy XIV’s endgame progression doesn’t grow intimidatingly long and difficult as cutting-edge players move on to harder content. By swapping the rewards of older (easier) content for varying amounts of new currency, new players should never feel too far behind the curve, and older dungeons remain relevant for new Level 50 characters.

With Patch 2.4, it’s happening again. Mythology tomestones are going the way of philosophy, being phased out though likely possible to convert to soldiery. Soldiery, the new “worse” currency, will have its weekly cap removed and will likely be found in greater abundance. The new tomestone, which hasn’t been named, will probably receive a weekly cap (in line with soldiery’s current limits) and be used for equipment and weapons that 2.4 will introduce.

We don’t know what the conversion rate of mythology to soldiery will be, nor what soldiery prices will be for items currently purchasable with mythology. Never mind the diversity of these items; mythology can be used to purchase everything from high-level armor and upgrade components to crafting materials. According to Square Enix, all items currently purchasable with mythology “will be made available through other means”; we don’t know what those means are, nor how they’ll compare to simply buying the items with what you have now. My recommendation, therefore, is to spend ‘em if you get ‘em.

Important: While Patch 2.4’s release date is unconfirmed, players expect it to go live next Tuesday, October 21, with maintenance enacting the patch occuring Monday, October 20 and continuing into Tuesday.
