Players can now download the 2D action game A King’s Tale: Final Fantasy XV for free from the PlayStation store. Good news for those who’ve have already slashed their way through Final Fantasy XV and are eager for more role-playing action before the first DLC offering launches.

Originally available only as a pre-order bonus for players who purchased the main game from GameStop, the little-known title has now been made available to all European and North American PS4 players. Even those who don’t own a copy of the legendary series’ fifteenth instalment can sample its delightfully retro style.

A King’s Tale: Final Fantasy XV is a side-scrolling action game featuring a fictitious tale set 30 years before the events of the main game. Players assume the role of Noctis’ father, King Regis, who, joined by Weskham and friends Cid and Clarus, journey from Insomnia to the plains of Duscae, battling all manner of monster along the way.

Contrary to its old school exterior, the gameplay is influenced by modern gaming with its fast-paced combat system that blends physical attacks, magic, summons and companion attacks.

A King’s Tale is the latest addition to the expansive Final Fantasy XV narrative that, along with the main game, has had a companion FMV movie, animated series and web novel. Just what art form will the tale expand into next? Song? Sculpture? Expressive Dance?

The latest Final Fantasy XV update brought 60fps PS4 Pro support as well as extra gameplay features. In our review, we described the game as “a brave, and largely successful gamble that continues the series’ renaissance.”
