The high-definition re-release of Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2 has seen continued success in Japan, with the PlayStation 2-era RPGs surpassing lifetime sales of the all-new Lightning Returns in a mere two weeks.
Both games hit Japan on December 26 on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, but have already comfortably outsold the closing chapter of the Final Fantasy XIII series of video games, which launched there on November 28.
Figures from Weekly Famitsu (via Gearnuke) confirm that FFX/X-2 moved 50,000 units on PS3 and 35,000 copies on PS Vita during its second week on the market. In total, the games have sold 402,000 units across both formats.
In addition, sales of the PS Vita standalone version of FFX HD total 22,000 for its debut week, putting the retro RPGs ahead of Lightning Returns, whose last sales figure amount to below the 400,000 mark.
FFX/X-2 HD beat out first week sales of Lightning Returns upon its launch in late December, so it’s not a surprise to see the momentum of the games continue into the New Year.
Furthermore, Japan is known to regard FFX as the greatest Final Fantasy title ever conceived, so its success on its home turf was always pretty much guaranteed. This is in strike contrast to western gamers, who revere FFVII as the best in the franchise.
It was recently confirmed that a studio named Virtuous worked on both ports, as opposed to series creator Square Enix.
Both games launch in the west in March 2014.
