Sony’s continued support of the PlayStation Portable through third-party publishers has been admirable in the months following PlayStation Vita’s launch, and the trend continues next week when XSEED and FuRyu’s unique RPG Unchained Blades arrives via the PlayStation Store.
When the North American PS Store updates next Tuesday, you’ll be able to download Unchained Blades for $29.99. The game sets you off on a journey with Fang, shamed dragon emperor who seeks the powers stripped from him by a goddess.
Interestingly, the game plays out from a first-person perspective, which is extremely rare for Japanese RPGs. Even more interesting is the serious talent that’s backing this project. Toshio Akashi of Lunar fame is directing the game, while veteran developers from the Grandia and Lunar series serve as writer and artist, respectively.
First-person viewpoint notwithstanding, turn-based combat fills out the 60-hour adventure with powers that can be acquired from “Unchained” monsters thwarted in battle. Your allies, described by XSEED as “a cowardly golem prince, a shy medusa princess, a young phoenix clan maiden, and many other mythical beings,” can all equip up to four “Unchained” monsters at once, adding a great degree of tactical depth to the experience.
