Five years on and GTA IV has sold 25 million

Strauss Zelnick, CEO and chairman of Take-Two, has announced that Grand Theft Auto IV has sold 25 million copies worldwide.

The open-world crime thriller was released in April 2008, with Zelnick noting during Take-Two’s latest earnings call that the Rockstar title moved 11 million units in its first month on sale.

Back in November, Zelnick confirmed that the GTA franchise has accumulated 125 million unit sales since its inception in 1997.

GTA IV contributed heavily to Take-Two’s FY14 Q1 earnings, despite sharing shelf space with the likes of newcomers BioShock: Infinite and Borderlands 2. Overall losses hit $62 million, marking a significant improvement over last year’s $111 million.

Rockstar supported GTA IV with two expansions: The Ballad of Gay Tony and The Lost and Damned.

The next chapter in the Grand Theft Auto franchise, GTA V, is due for release on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on September 17.
