They will be working on games based on James Cameron’s Avatar movie franchise!
After the release of Battlefield 1 last year, DICE General Manager surprisingly announced that he was leaving the studio he’s been with for 14 years. Over on Swedish publication Di DIGITAL, Bach announced that he’s joining Ubisoft’s newly opened Stockholm studio, and is working on games based on James Cameron’s Avatar film franchise.
Bear in mind that the info here comes straight from Google Translate, so there is a chance that some thoughts might be lost in translation and whatnot. In the interview, Bach states that the Stockholm studio’s goal is to emply 100 people and "grow" after that. In regards to the actual games being made, the first film sequel to Avatar is due on 2020, with the last sequel planned to hit theaters in 2025. This long development time gives Ubisoft plenty of time to build James Cameron’s vision to the gaming world without having to rush.
Given his rather illustrious career at DICE, it wouldn’t surprise me if the Avatar games actually turn out to be good. We’ll know in a few years, anyway.
We wish Patrick Bach and the new Ubisoft Stockholm studio all the best!
