Movie director Paul W.S. Anderson has revealed that the upcoming fourth entry in the Resident Evil movie franchise (tentatively titled RE: Afterlife) will be presented in 3D and has been conceived as a “rebirth” of the series.
Speaking to website ShockTillYouDrop.com, Anderson stated that he will be directing the flick in addition to confirming the return of actress Milla Jovovich as feisty undead slayer Alice.
“I always envisioned Resident Evil as a trilogy of films," he said. And we’ve been very lucky where it’s a trilogy where the audience has built and built. I wanted to kick off a brand new trilogy. I’m really excited we’re doing it [in 3-D] and we’re using the same camera system [James] Cameron used for Avatar. There are a lot of exciting things about this one. I don’t regard it as Resident Evil 4, I regard it as a re-tooling and rebirth of the entire franchise."
While much of the plot remains underwraps, it is believed the zombie sequel will feature a number of other returning characters from previous films, including the appearance of several new characters plucked from the videogames.
Resident Evil: Afterlife is currently pencilled in for release on September 17, 2010.
