Free Realms coming to PlayStation Network on March 29

Free Realms, Sony Online Entertainment’s free-to-play MMO, will be made available to PlayStation Network users on March 29, announced the game’s lead designer on the PlayStation Blog.

Much like more hardcore MMOs, this casual online playground allows players to explore, battle monsters, and find collectibles. It also has a bounty of other activities like cart-racing, soccer matches, and pirate ship battles, plus a host of flash-based mini-games. Its presentation and and activities cater to a younger audience than most MMOs — but at the appealing price of $0, we imagine plenty of people will give it a whirl, if only for kicks and giggles.

"The entire Free Realms team is super excited as this will be the very first casual, free-to-play MMO ever to be offered on the PlayStation Network," said Stephen Bokkes, lead designer of Free Realms. "So, grab your controller, grab your friends, and prepare yourself for an adventure unlike anything you’ve ever seen before."

Cross-platform play between PC and PlayStation 3 is not available, as "the logistics involved with synchronized publishes and account linking make it impractical," according to Bokkes.
