Japanese publication Dengeki PlayStation (via Andriasang) has dropped a fresh batch of Final Fantasy Type-0 details for your consumption.
The mag delves into the RPG’s battle system, confirming that Type-0 utilizes a similar template to previous Final Fantasy games – namely, taking a party of three and pummelling foes with a combination of physical weapons and magic.
Players will be able to build up an Ability Gauge by hitting the PSP’s face buttons (circle, triangle, square and x), which correspond to various abilities. While it’s not confirmed, it appears you can hit circle and triangle to unleash a special type of attack that depletes this gauge.
In terms of foes, Type-0 offers up a myriad of enemies to scrap with, some of which will flee from battle or surrender. Furthermore, players can even converse with adversaries to obtain usual information. You can also end a battle quickly by dispatching the enemy leader.
Elsewhere, we’re also given the skinny on the battle styles for three characters: Ace, Nine and Queen.
Ace utilizes cards in a battle, and unleashes a specific type of attack depending on the card wielded. Aside from being used to attack foes, the cards also boast various other abilities such as the power to heal allies or change their status. The magazine gives mention to an attack known as Fire ST, a potent fire-based attack that barbeques your enemies.
Meanwhile, Nine possesses a meaty lance for combat purposes, which he uses by either swinging it around or leaping into the air for a devastating ground-slam. Nine can also combo enemies, and his standard attack is apparently dubbed the “Holy Lance.”
Finally, Queen wields a good old-fashioned sword for slicing n’ dicing adversaries. Compared to Ace and Nine, she’s primarily a proximity-based brawler, with her standard attack being “Mythryl Saber” and a special manoeuvre known as “Cross.” The latter damages all on-screen foes and heals your entire party to boot.
Also detailed is the support magic known as Wall, which establishes a barrier around your character shielding them from an enemy attack. However, it will dissipate after accumulating a certain amount of damage.
Lastly, we’re also given a few juicy story details. Apparently, all Type-0’s characters are students from Class Zero of Suzaku, a magic school based in the nation of Rubrum. Nearby provinces also have their own school – or Peristylium – including the nations of Milites, Anaze and Kogai. Unfortunately, the four nation’s already fragile military balance is smashed when Milites decides to invade Rubrum, kicking off a full-scale war.
In addition to Ace, Nine and Queen, Class Zero’s head honcho Kurasame will also join in on the action, and was apparently something of a fierce warrior back in the day, going by the alias of “death god of the ice blade.” He’s also accompanied by a Tonberry, a creature that should instantly resonate with any self-respecting Final Fantasy aficionado.
Final Fantasy Type-0 is scheduled for release in Japan exclusively on PSP later this year.
