FSR 4 Derived Solution To Replace Current PSSR On PS5 Pro In 2026 – UPDATED

UPDATE – In a previous version of this article we stated that FSR 4 would be ‘replacing’ PSSR on PS5 Pro 2026. This is not the case. We have adjusted the article to better reflect the fact that the co-developed solution which will emerge next year for PS5 Pro is partially derived from FSR 4, rather than FSR 4 itself replacing PSSR in its entirety. We apologise for this error.

Speaking during an interview with TomsGuide, PS5 hardware lead architect Mark Cerny has revealed that the format holder will release an update for PS5 Pro in 2026 that will implement a co-developed solution which is partially derived from AMD’s FSR 4, which is set to replace the current iteration of Sony’s PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR).

The algorithm they came up with could be implemented on current-generation hardware. So the co-developed algorithm has already been released by AMD as part of FSR 4 on PC. And we’re in the process of implementing it on PS5 and it will release next year on PS5 Pro. It’s not a cut-down [version] of the algorithm. It’s the full-fat version of the co-developed super resolution that we’ll be releasing on PS5 Pro.

Cerny has previously revealed during an interview with Digital Foundry that he views FSR 4 as the ‘next evolution‘ for PSSR, andat the time hoped to have something similar to this technology available for PS5 Pro at some point. Evidently things have gone smoothly, as it’s happening next year.

As previously reported, Sony and AMD have teamed up for Project Amethyst, with the PlayStation manufacturer having contributed to the development of FRS 4, which is a new machine-learning upscaler that is comparable in performance to Nvidia’s DLSS.
