Phew, what’s that burning smell? Ah, that’ll be the whiff of singed trouser pockets across the globe, still fresh from whopping great hole that our wallets burned last month. I mean, let’s face it – February was a stonking month, a proper sumptuous smorgasbord of triple-A treats all scrapping it out for our hard-earned cash. Indeed, the only loving we were dishing out on Valentine’s Day was to our PS3’s (ok, that admittedly sounds a little dodgy, but let’s not got there). Bottom line is, like January before it, February brought something to the plate for everyone, regardless of taste. Got an itchy trigger finger? Bulletstorm says hi. Curious to see who would win a fight between Albert Wesker and Shuma Gorath? Marvel vs. Capcom 3’s got you covered.
Of course, I’m deliberately skirting around the main attraction here. Part of me wanted to cobble together some elaborately constructed intro to what I’m about to say next, but in the end, I concluded it didn’t need one. Killzone 3 – ‘nuff said. Yep, the Guerrilla Games goliath is where it’s all at for most PS3 gamers, and by now we’re sure many of you have already bolted through the campaign and spent countless hours raking in the kills online. With the possible exception of Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, the third instalment in the hugely successful IP is unequivocally the PS3’s most important release this year, and its success at UK retail certainly acts as a testament to the brand’s perpetual pulling power. No doubt our friends across the pond have also flocked to the sequel in their droves.
And so we come, inexorably, to the nitty gritty of bestowing one worthy title with our Game of the Month accolade for February 2011. And yes, you’ve guessed it – Killzone 3 has it in the bag. A surprise result? Not on your life. A deserving recipient? Absolutely. Featuring some of the most scrumptious visuals witnessed on Sony’s black box to date, Guerrilla’s shooter is a captivating spectacle of intense gun battles, adrenaline-fuelled set pieces and comprehensive multiplayer all rolled into one. It’s everything we at PSU could want and more to boot, with the developers obviously having implemented some tweaks to improve upon the formula following the equally thrilling Killzone 2 back in 2009. Adam Dolge heaped praise on the title in his review, and this is coming from a chap who is admittedly a little tired of the deluge of first-person shooters arriving on the market as of late. Here’s a quick snippet of what he had to say on Killzone 3 below. Be sure to check out the video review too.
“PS3 owners have so much to do so far in 2011, and Killzone 3 only sweetens the pot. Everyone has high expectations for the game, and boy does it go beyond what we expected. Guerrilla Games once again has delivered a top notch first-person shooter experience worthy of ample praise. It has everything we loved about Killzone 2, plus local co-op, awesome melee combat, and a terrific narrative. This is a must-buy, but we’re sure you already knew that. In fact, Killzone 3 isn’t just a must-buy; it’s one of the best games to arrive on Sony’s flagship console to date – period.”
