2024’s Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 was easily one of the year’s best surprises. It arrived not just a stunning game to look at, but as one of the best action games we’ve seen in years.
It was also the latest in a hot streak of quality games based on the Warhammer 40K franchise, with recent releases like Boltgun and Darktide also impressing. In all the recent Warhammer video game releases though, we’ve yet to see a true blue Warhammer RPG come through.
Well, according to a report from MP1st (spotted by VGC), we were close to seeing that happen, until Games Workshop pulled the plug on the project.
An unannounced Warhammer RPG was in the works at studio Thought Pennies, according to MP1st, and had been in development for at least three years. However towards the end of 2024, Warhammer owner Games Workshop pulled the contract and cut off funding for what was Thought Pennies main project at the time.
Unfortunately, that funding being pulled by Games Workshop meant layoffs for Thought Pennies towards the end of 2024. Chief creative officer at Thought Pennies called what the studio had been creating for the last three years “something amazing,” and that funding being cut happened because “Our publisher changed strategic direction.”
There are still other Warhammer games in development, even a TV series is currently in the works with Henry Cavill on as an executive producer. It’s likely we’ll get a Warhammer RPG in the future, though just not the one that Thought Pennies was making.
